As an individual you will need to file a self assessment tax return with HMRC if you fall into any of the following categories:
- You have rental income from a property or land - Your main private residence is usually excluded.
- You have an annual income of £100,000 or more.
- You receive untaxed income which cannot be taxed through your PAYE code.
- You are a Company Director.
- You have foreign income above £300.
- You sell shares, property or other assets liable to Capital Gains Tax.
It is your responsibility as the tax payer to ensure that your tax return is complete and correct - HMRC will issue penalties for errors made, even for honest mistakes.
